Over 3,000 buildings including churches, guest houses, filing stations and hospitals were illegally erected on lands reserved for public primary and secondary schools across Ogun State.
Chairman of the state House of Assembly Committee on Education Science and Technology, Adeyinka Mafe, disclosed this at a public hearing on public schools’ land encroachment. Mafe said the hearing was aimed at putting a stop to the era of impunity on the part of land speculators and encroachers, adding that after scrutinizing relevant documents of individuals involved, the Assembly would make appropriate recommendations to the state government.
While disclosing that about 70 schools were affected across the state, the lawmaker assured that individual cases would be treated on merit. He said government would ensure that public schools have proper demarcation to stop illegal activities.
Speaker of the Assembly, Suraj Ishola Adekunbi, said the forum was convened to address the challenges of encroachment into the property of educational institutions and to deliberate on how best to resolve the issue.
