Yuletide: There’s more than enough fuel, says NNPC

As the yuletide approaches, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation has assured that it has “more than enough fuel” to meet demands by the citizens.

Group Managing Director, NNPC,  Mr. Andrew Yakubu, said there was no need for panic buying.

Yakubu spoke to journalists on the sidelines of the 2013 Health Safety and Environment Awareness Week at the headquarters of the corporation on Wednesday in Abuja.

He said, “The NNPC is very, very prepared for the yuletide. We have more than enough stock. As we speak we have over 35 days stock and between now and Christmas, even if we do not bring fuel in at all, we have more than enough stock to go round the country.

“Let me seize this opportunity to call on all Nigerians not to panic because we are properly positioned in terms of stock. And our various distribution outlets are there to support petroleum distribution.”

Christmas season in Nigeria is occasionally characterised by fuel scarcity, a development which often triggers panic buying and hoarding.

However, when reporters asked the NNPC boss to comment on plans to privatise the nation’s four refineries, he quickly moved on without any response to the question.

Minister of Petroleum, Mrs. Diezani Allison-Madueke, had earlier in the week hinted that the Federal Government was planning to commence the privatisation of its four refineries next year.
