A Minna Chief Magistrates’ Court on Friday sentenced one Yau Bawa of Tungar Mallam in Minna, to two years imprisonment for belonging to a gang of thieves.
The accused was arraigned before the court on a two-count charge of belonging to a gang of thieves and being in possession of dry leaves, suspected to be Indian hemp.
The Police Prosecutor, Sgt. Gunduma Ibrahim, told the court that the convict was arrested on Nov. 15 at a location where criminals often carried out their nefarious activities.
He said the convict was also found to be in possession of dry leaves, suspected to be Indian hemp.
The prosecutor said the offence contravened Section 306 of the Penal Code and Section 319 of the Indian hemp Act
When the charges were read to the accused, he pleaded guilty
Ibrahim urged the court to try Bawa in line with Section 157 of the Criminal Procedure Code, based on his plea
In his ruling, Magistrate Hassan Mohammed, sentenced the accused to two years imprisonment without a fine option
