Two men, Tijani Mohammed, 27 and Jidda Akali, 26, have been arraigned before an Igbosere Magistrate’s Court for allegedly absconding with 600 bags of rice.
The police told the court that the stolen rice was worth N4.8m.
It was learnt that Mohammed and Akali had been hired by the complainant, Alhaji Sabo Haruna, to transport the 600 bags of rice from Lagos State to Ibafo, Ogun State.
The two men were said to have conspired with some other people, who were still wanted by the police, to divert the rice to another destination.
They reportedly ran away in March 12, 2012 when the incident happened.
After intensified search, the duo was caught and arraigned on two counts of stealing.
The charges read in part, “That you, Tijani Mohammed, Jidda Akali, and others now at large on or about March 12, 2012 at Apapa, in the Lagos Magisterial District, while on transit from Apapa to Ibafo, stole 600 bags of rice valued at N4,800,00, property of one Alhaji Sabo Haruna.”
The offences were said to be punishable under Sections 409 and 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2011.
The defendants said they were not guilty of the charges.
The Magistrate, Mr. J. A. Adegun, admitted the defendants to bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties each in like sum.
The case was adjourned till December 16.
