Police arrest 24 persons in Taraba for operating illegal organisations

 The police in Taraba said on Friday in Jalingo that it had arrested 24 persons over alleged extortion and operation of  illegal organisations in the state.

This is contained in a statement signed by the Commissioner of Police, Mr Jubril Adeniji.

The statement said that 11 of the persons, who included a retired police officer, were apprehended for operating Elites Community Initiatives Corps of Nigeria (ECICN).

It said that the group illegally received over N23 million from 815 job seekers for forms, identity cards, uniforms, interviews and accreditation fees.

“They claim to have trained 400 of those recruited from Adamawa and Taraba states in August 2013 on the outskirt of Jalingo town,  while another set of 415 applicants are awaiting training,” it said.

The statement also said that four of the persons, led by Mohammed Kabir, were apprehended for running an Emergency Rescue Team (ERT) which was not duly registered.

It said that Kabir and his accomplices received over N2 million from 919 job seekers as payment for uniforms and registration fees.

The statement said that another group of nine persons, which had Dr Leonard Stephen as its coordinator, were also arrested for operating United Nigeria Chaplaincy (UNCN), another unregistered organisation.

“Documents recovered from them indicate that they have over 200 members from whom they have extorted various sums of money totalling over N 9 million,” it said.

The statement said that the police had seized various documents such as fake certificates of incorporation and introduction letters to the state governor, among others, from the arrested persons.
