Plateau commissioner denies cholera outbreak in Jengre

There is no cholera outbreak in Jengre in Bassa Local Government area of Plateau as being speculated, Mr Abraham Yiljap, the Commissioner for Health, has said.

Yiljap said in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Jos, that the speculations started “after a health challenge that happened in the area where 25 persons were hospitalised’’.

“The health challenge was discovered to be malaria after the State Emergency Health Rapid Response Team rushed to the hospitals and clinics in the area.

“The medical team visited the SDA Hospital, Jibape Hospital and Primary Health Centre in Jengre, to ascertain the causes of the health challenge.

“The medical team reviewed the cases of all patients on admission and those discharged within the past two weeks.

“The Ministry of Health Epidemiological Unit conducted a review of all the cases of the health challenge and confirmed that it was a malaria outbreak and not cholera as being speculated,“ he said

Yiljap said that the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), in conjunction with the state government, had deployed 10 water tankers to supply clean water to residents of Namu, where cholera outbreak was earlier reported.

The commissioner said that government had released an additional N10 million for the purchase of drugs for the treatment of cholera victims in the area.

“We have solicited the assistance of owners of private bore holes to release them for community use in Namu and its environs.

“We have also mobilised security agencies to assist us in enforcing the sanitation exercise in Namu and other parts of the state to checkmate the spread of the disease.

“The state government has established an Emergency Health Surveillance Team that will continue to go round the 17 local government areas to ensure the safety of all citizens,“ he said.

The commissioner urged the residents to imbibe the spirit of good sanitation, avoid living in an unhealthy environment and drinking untreated water.
