The Lagos government on Friday trained 250 Special Traffic Mayors to complement the efforts of the state Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) in traffic control.
The Commissioner for Transportation, Mr Kayode Opeifa, said at the venue of the training in Alausa, Ikeja, that the special traffic mayors have the same rights as the regular traffic officers.
Opeifa said the functions of the mayors were as important as the regular traffic officers, except the issuance of fine tickets and wearing of uniforms.
“You have the right to everything done by the regular LASTMA officers except two things — putting on uniforms and the issuance of fine tickets,’’ he said.
The commissioner urged the mayors to be careful when dealing with motorists.
He also urged them to be professional in the discharge of their duties “and always call on armed police men when in difficult times.
“Also, I want to warn the mayors not to hang their jackets in front of their vehicles, but put them on while on duty.’’
He added that the 250 Special Traffic Mayors, drawn from 15 major clubs in the state, would be inducted on Nov. 17 by Gov. Babatunde Fashola.
Mr Young Arebamen, the Chief Executive Officer of LASTMA, charged the mayors to be committed in their duties “although it is a selfless service to humanity.”
A Special Traffic Mayor, Mr Ralph Ozoude, Lekki Zone, said the training would help the mayors to understand their duties.
Mr Adebayo Salami, an actor, popularly called Oga, from the IKorodu Zone, urged motorists to respect the mayors.
Salami promised to do his best to ensure safety on the road.
