How to approach link building for your website BY NIYI ADEGBOYE

Links, according to Wikipedia, are considered as editorial “votes” from one website to another site and plays a major role in the ranking position in search engines.

After technical Search Engine Optimisation or what is known as onsite SEO, the next most important factor that will affect your ranking and which is very important to consider are editorial links.

The worldwide web is a huge interlinked resource of pages, videos and images and therefore one relevant link from a site to another website is like saying, “Hey, I support this website, therefore pass any page rank authority I have to it.” This has therefore made link building an integrated part of SEO.

If you want to beat your competitors and get more search engine ranking technically, you are going to need more “links” to your website.

Before the Google Penguin update, it used to be that you could go and get links from anywhere and they would count; but as search engines try to create a healthy competitive environment, the way some link building is done has been devalued. As we approach 2014, the thin line between black-hat techniques and white-hat will get narrower; therefore, you need to understand how to approach link building the right way. Approaching it with a right attitude will be the deciding factor between getting high quality relevant links or turning such links into spam.

A good approach to getting relevant links will answer the following questions: What is the relevance of this link to my website? Will it result into more web traffic? Is it to boost my page rank? Do you want to create awareness for your brand? Or are you dropping these links because you were told to build links?

Types of Links

Do-follow links: These are links that pass authority to a website. This is the type of links that boost ranking and by far most difficult to get, e.g. Editorial links.

No-follow links: They are links that do not pass authority or votes. These types of links are necessary to build relationships and drive traffic to a website. Easy to get and can be spam if not done correctly, e.g. Pay Per Click links

How to get more links

Comments: In a recent release by Google Head of Spam, Matt Cutts, emphasis was laid on commenting as a method of building links and in 2014, I see Google placing more weight on forum commenting. This means they are going to devalue comment links that are done for the sole purpose of building links.

But if you are interested in building link by commenting, you first need to find niche-related websites. Anytime they post a blog post which you find interesting, read it and if you have something interesting to say, join in the discussion. One rule you should obey is to try to avoid your competitors.

Guest posting: Guest blogging is one of the scalable white-hat techniques that can be used to build links but which has the potential to be abused. Most guest bloggers write poor content on other people’s website but produce quality content on theirs. This is wrong; and with Google authorship, it is becoming easier to identify guest bloggers. This means it will be easier to know bloggers who produce poor contents and people will avoid them like plague.

Directory submission: One link building method that is still as relevant as they were when they were first introduced is directory submission. This link building technique is recommended for any new website just trying to build links. One big importance of directory submission is that it can get you links on a high page ranking website. One way to avoid pitfall when using this method is to submit your website to the appropriate directory. You can even maximise your ROI by using niche-specific directory. Free or paid directory? The choice remains yours.

Social media: Link building using social media is more of getting more traffic to your website with the hope of getting links as reward in the long run. If you are considering getting links from social media, what you are looking for is getting your digital assets to go viral. Viral contents are contents that get shared, reposted or retweeted.

Link building is a very interesting process. When thinking links, think more in terms of relationship building and assets creations as link bait than going straight and asking for a web link.

Most often, the outreach that results in links to your website are those that were built over a period of time and not just the one-off approach.
