Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu on Thursday assured those agitating for the creation of additional states in the country that the National Assembly would assist them to realise their dreams once they comply with all the requirements as stipulated in the constitution.
Ekweremadu stated this when he received in audience the Coordinator of Ijebu State Movement, Chief Timothy Adebanjo, who led a powerful delegation of prominent traditional rulers and elder statesmen from Ijebu land, to re submit their ammended request for the creation of Ijebu state from the present Ogun State.
The Deputy Senate President commended the delegation for taking positive step towards the realisation of their dream for the creation of Ijebu State and assured them that as Chairman, Ad-Committee on the review of the 1999 Constitution, he would ensure a successful accomplishment of the task.
He said, “Creation of new states in a democracy though appear rather difficult, is not impossible in a democracy. We will consider necessary constitutional means to ensure that Nigerians realise their dreams through a fair and democratic process”
Adebanjo, after presenting the document to the senate leadership, said the agitation for the creation of Ijebu state had the blessing of the Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona; other traditional rulers, chiefs and entire Ijebu people covering six local government areas of Ogun State.
He said, “We declare with all sense of responsibility that our request has met all the conditions and has fulfiled all the provisions set out in Section 8 of the 1999 Constitution, and to progress to the next stages for the actualisation of our dream. We implore you to take action now to avoid the mistake of 1983″
