Let’s avoid strikes, Anglican Primate warns government, labour leaders

The Primate of Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), Most Rev. Nicholas Okoh on Wednesday warned government at all levels and the various trade union leaders “to explore all avenues to avoid industrial disharmony and strikes this year.”

In his sermon at the New Year Service held at the Cathedral Church of the Advent, Life Camp, Gwarinpa, Abuja, he urged the Federal Government to do everything within its power to create more employments for youths and harness their potentials for national development.

The Cleric prophesied more progress for the people of Nigeria in the New Year, but called on the government and the citizens, particularly, the union leaders to place national interest above selfish agenda to ensure industrial harmony thoroughout the year.

“I appeal to the union leaders to negotiate, to adopt a better approach, and I appeal to government to listen to them, so that they can reach a compromise and avoid industrial disharmony”, he pleaded.

The Primate, while making it clear that changes were inevitable in 2014, also admonished Nigerians to develop patriotic attitude, and “lean on God who does not change”.

He said, “The work of improving Nigerian economy cannot be isolated in one way or the other; the government should do everything that will bring in more employments, so that the young people can get opportunity of more jobs, because we want our young people to be more fruitful in 2014. They should employ their talents; give them better education so that they can have opportunity to join in building Nigeria.”
