Impunity, greed cause of Nigeria’s troubles, says Kukah

The Bishop of Sokoto Catholic Diocese, Revd. Matthew Kukah, has identified impunity, nepotism, greed and external influence as causes of Boko Haram and air disasters in the country.

He stated this on Thursday in his lecture at the N500m fund raising for 60 Angels Memorial Staff Residence in honour of the 60 students of Loyola Jesuit College, Abuja, that died in the Sosoliso plane crash of December 10, 2005.

Only two passengers including one student of the school, Miss. Kechi Okwuchi, survived the plane crash.

Okwuchi is still undergoing therapy in the United States after initial treatment in South Africa, her father, Mr. Mike Okwuchi told reporters in Abuja. He said not less than $250,000 had been spent on her treatment.

Chairman, Parents Teacher Association, Mrs. Ochuko Momoh, said the staff residence would assist teachers to solve accommodation problem.

Lamenting the poor attitude of government officials to sensitive operations, Kukah urged government to learn from the disasters of the past to avoid future occurrence.

He criticised the government for not punishing those responsible for past disasters to serve as deterrent to others.

He said, “The tragic thing in Nigeria’s situation is that everything bad happens and nobody gets punished.

“Obedience to law is the beginning of security. The truth of the matter is that unless we find a way of reversing this culture of impunity, things may not get better.”
