Shekarau’s defection: We are not perturbed, says APC

The All Progressives Congress on Thursday said it was not perturbed about the departure of the former governor of Kano State, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, from the party.

Shekarau, a leading figure in the merger of opposition political parties, which gave birth to the APC, left the party on Wednesday, to join the ruling Peoples Democratic Party.

Interim National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said this in response to inquiries by The PUNCH, about the issue.

He explained that the party made several entreaties to the former governor asking him to let go of his personal ego in the interest of the nation and the party to no avail.

Mohammed however said the party took solace in the fact that his departure did not cause the level of damage earlier envisaged.

He explained that the damage to the party’s fortunes in Kano was not significant considering the fact that most of the party’s loyalists had remained faithful.

“Frankly speaking, we are not perturbed and we are also not surprised. The people of Kano State are politically savvy,” he said.

Shekarau said Mohammed’s response did not come to him as a surprise because, he knew next to nothing about the dynamics of Kano politics.
