FG dispels rumours about fuel scarcity

The Federal Government, through its Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency, on Saturday, dispelled rumours of looming fuel scarcity in Nigeria.

The Executive Secretary, PPPRA, Mr. Reginald Stanley, said there was sufficient Premium Motor Spirit in the country to guarantee uninterrupted fuel supply.

According to him, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation and other fuel marketers had about 27-day PMS in stock.

Stanley gave the assurance against the backdrop of what he described as “unfounded fear of a looming scarcity.”

This, he said, was due to the usual practice where some marketers hoarding products in order to profiteer from panic-buying by citizens during the festive periods.

Stanley, in a statement, was quoted as saying, “We wish to assure Nigerians that there is steady trucking out of products across the country and the trend shall continue without any hindrance.

“Our confidence in steady supply of products across the country is largely anchored upon the fact that our supply chain had a wonderful performance during the recent festive period.”

He said the PPPRA does not expect any distortion now that the nation is dealing with a low demand period.

Stanley said products discharges by vessels at the depots nationwide showed that a total of about 200 million litres of PMS were discharged as at December 31, 2013 with many more vessel nominations being handled by the agency.

He explained that this was as a result of the proactive measures put in place by the Federal Government to ensure steady products supply during and beyond the just ended Christmas and New Year festivities.

The PPPRA boss urged members of the public to ignore threats of looming fuel scarcity, as there was enough fuel in all the depots to service the retail outlets nationwide.
