Ejigbo torture: Lagos to prosecute suspects soon
The Lagos State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Ade Ipaye, has said the state government will soon arraign suspects arrested over the alleged torture of three women in the Ejigbo area of the state.
Eight suspects were said to have been arrested in connection with the incident which drew public outrage after it went viral on the Internet.
Ipaye, at a press conference in Lagos on Wednesday, said the suspects would be taken to court once the police completed their investigation into the matter.
The suspects were alleged to have tortured a woman, her daughter and her step daughter for allegedly stealing pepper at Ejigbo market in February 2013.
It was learnt that one of the women died thereafter.
Ipaye maintained that the government would take appropriate action on the case as soon as his office received the case file from the police.
He said, “As soon as we get the case file, we will issue legal advice and charge the matter to court.
“As a government, we will ensure that this matter is prosecuted and those responsible are brought to justice because we want to discourage that kind of incident in Lagos State.”
He said the government learnt of the incident rather late, adding that the residents were forced to surrender the suspects upon the implementation of the suggestion by the state’s Office of the Public Defender that the market be shut down.
