BRT moved 45 million commuters in 2013 -Official
The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority on Wednesday said the Bus Rapid Transit moved no fewer than 45 million passengers in 2013.
The External Relations Specialist of LAMATA, Mr Kolawole Ojelabi, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos that the buses had moved more than 250 million commuters since inception in 2008.
“BRT has been moving between 40 million to 45 million people yearly on its corridor.
“Since the BRT started, it has moved more than 250 million passengers and very soon we will also have it carrying more passengers,” he said.
Ojelabi, noted that the age of the BRT lane coupled with the weight of the buses and the load they carry were responsible for the potholes visible on its lanes.
According to him, government has promised that it will find a permanent solution to the corridor by changing the flexible pavements with concrete.
“We are very much aware of the potholes on the BRT lane and the government is set to change the flexible pavement with concrete and very soon that work will start.
“The changing of flexible pavement to concrete has been awarded and it will be a permanent solution to the corridor. Soon, people will see us start work on that corridor,” Ojelabi said.
He added that the state government only demarcated the lane at the introduction of BRT in 2008, while the road was constructed above thirty years ago.
