Anambra: PDP backs Nwoye’s suit challenging APGA’s victory

The Peoples Democratic Party said on Sunday that it was in support of the suit filed by its governorship candidate in the November 16 election in Anambra State, Mr. Tony Nwoye, in which he is challenging the victory of the All Progressive Grand Alliance candidate in the election, Mr. Willie Obiano.

The result announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission showed that  APGA polled 180,178 votes, while the  PDP came second with 97,700 votes and the All Progressives Congress with  95,963 votes, came third.

There were insinuations that the leadership of the PDP worked behind the scene for the victory of the APGA candidate in the election because of the closeness of the Governor of the State, Mr. Peter Obi, to President Goodluck Jonathan.

In fact, the issue was one of the numerous alleged anti-party activities leveled against Jonathan by former President Olusegun Obasanjo in his letter to the President.

Nwoye’s campaign group had also accused the leadership of the party of working for the opposition at the detriment of the party’s candidate during the election.

The National Chairman of the party, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, has, however, restated the commitment of the National Working Committee of the  party to  abide by laid-down electoral processes and the rule of law to resolve the Anambra governorship issue.

PDP National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh, in a statement, said the NWC was therefore in total support of  Nwoye’s suit challenging the result of the poll.

Metuh described the action of the candidate as a step in the right direction and an acceptance of the directive  of the NWC, which he said had been communicated to him (Nwoye) to pursue the mandate in accordance with established democratic procedures and rules.
