Robbery suspect not a soldier – Army

The 9 Brigade of the Nigerian Army has said a robbery suspect, who was killed during the exchange of gunfire with policemen in Lagos State last week was not a soldier.

PUNCH Metro had reported last week Friday that men of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad had killed two robbers, one of which was a soldier, with the name Sgt Eyo B and number 93NA/968, displayed on an identity card found in his possession.

However, the army said the slain robber was an impersonator.

In a statement signed by Major O.J Gbadamosi on behalf of Commander 9 Brigade, Brig.Gen Adeniyi Oyebade, the army said it had investigated the matter and there was no soldier bearing the name.

The statement read in part, “I wish to state that the Nigerian Army does not condone any form of indiscipline or criminality within its ranks and on reading the news, the Commander 9 Brigade, Brigadier General Adeniyi Oyebade, sent an officer to confirm from the Lagos State Police Command to ascertain if the person was of the Nigerian Army.

“The outcome of our investigations revealed that the suspected armed robber was an impersonator with a fake Nigerian Army identity card.”
