A member of the House of Representative, Adams Jagaba, has expressed worry over the recent report that Northern Nigeria has a high record in the consumption of illicit drugs.
Jagaba, who is the Chairman House of Representatives Committee on Drugs, Narcotics and Financial Crimes, expressed this concern in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kaduna on Sunday.
He said that there was link between illicit drugs and criminal activities like kidnapping and hostage taking, armed robbery and prostitution, which were prevalent among the Nigerian youths.
He added that government was concerned about the magnitude and the rising trend in the demand for and traffic in narcotic drugs and psychotropic substance.
The legislator said that the trend undermined the economy and threatened the stability and security of the country.
“It also adversely affects the image of the country and the wellbeing of citizens.’’
Jagaba was at the formal presentation and commissioning of Benjamin Bissa Shekari Lives on Foundation.
The Executive Secretary of the foundation, Mrs Rifkatu Shekari, said that the foundation was established as a direct response and contribution to minimise the menace of drug-abuse and addiction.
She stressed that the foundation believed that one way of reducing the menace was by empowering the youths with skills training to ensure they were engaged in useful venture.
She called on parents to be committed to their God-given responsibility of training their children in the right direction and accorded adequate attention they deserve.
