Many injured as explosion rocks Obamkpa
EXPLOSION rocked Obamkpa town Friday in Aniocha North local government area of Delta State when the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Mr. Victor Ochei visited the town in connection with a road construction within the area.
Several people were feared to have been wounded but police confirmed that only two were wounded while a suspect has been arrested.
As a result of the explosion, there was commotion as everybody scampered for safety.
The type of explosive that caused the explosion was still sketchy as at the time of this report, but Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Mr. Lucky Uyabame told our reporter on phone that “yes, there was explosion that is confirmed but details later. One person has been arrested and two people were wounded”.
An witness told our reporter that the explosion might had been caused by the over zealousness of one of the police officers that accompanied the Speaker to the venue as he was alleged to have opened fire into the air as soon as the Speaker arrived.
“It was when the Mopol (mobile police officer) was shooting into the air in excitement that the explosion occurred. Already, our people over here had a traditional way of welcoming important dignitaries and canons laid as mines in readiness to be ignited at the appropriate time.
“But when the Mopol opened fire”, the witness continued, “that instantly ignited the canons which started blasting and flying into the crowd” .
PPRO Uyabame who confirmed the arrest of one person, refused to disclose the identity of the person whether the person was a police officer or civilian. Many injured as explosion rocks Obamkpa
