Labour leader seeks freedom of association for workers

Mr John Kolawole, former Secretary General of the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria on Wednesday urged employers to allow their workers join the union to avoid industrial crisis.

Kolawole told the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos that “it is against the Nigerian Constitution for employers to stop their employees from joining a union of their choice.

“It is the right of every worker by the International Labour Organisation  convention and the Constitution of Nigeria to associate or belong to any organisation of their choice.

“Belonging to a union in any work place does not disturb the smooth running of that organisation. It only enhances productivity,’’ he said.

Kolawole, who said that organised labour had fared well in President Goodluck’s administration, urged the leadership to use the opportunity to improve the welfare of their members.

“ Labour is doing well, especially in this administration there has been opportunity for participation.

“But, what is important now is that they should use this era for the improvement of the welfare of their members and the masses.

“There are issues that are very much pending and negotiations are still on like the issue of power that has been privatised.

“It has not been properly concluded it must be done in a way that democracy is allowed, the constitution followed,’’ he said.

Kolawole urged the Federal Government and ASUU to reach a compromise so that ASUU could end the strike it embanked on in May

“ I urge the government to obey the agreement it signed with ASUU and ASUU should be able to strike a balance from the reasons why it cannot implement its agreement.

“ Striking a balance is all what negotiation is all about. Negotiations must not be approached from a win-win situation,’’ he said.
