THE trial of the sons of Governor Sule Lamido of Jigawa State for money laundering is to continue despite the decision of the governor not to defect from the ruling People’s Democratic Party to the opposition All Progressives Party.
A senior Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, official made it clear last night that the arrest and investigation of the governor’s children over funds amounting to N10 billion had no political undertone.
The operative said the agency did not want to be seen as playing politics with a serious issue of money laundering, for which the suspects had already made some statements that would lead to prosecution at the appropriate time.
The source, which confirmed the release of the governor’s sons on bail, pointed out that they would be made to return for questioning in connection with the matter, which was already in the public domain.
The official said,” This is a pure case of money laundering and does not have anything to do with the governor’s position on PDP or APC and we do not want any political meaning to be given to the matter, which is being investigated.”
The arrest and detention of the two sons of the governor also opened the door for the detention of some bank workers accused of aiding and abetting the alleged crime.
But the governor, Sule Lamido, had imputed political intimidation and unwarranted attempt to frame his sons in a bid to cow him because of his political leaning.
Although he refused to join the APC on Tuesday, Lamido pointed out that he would not be stampeded by any person to act against his belief and conviction.
