Court imprisons two friends for stealing diesel

An Osogbo Chief Magistrate’s Court on Thursday sentenced a driver and his friend to six months imprisonment each for stealing 30 litres of diesel from their employer.

The convicted driver, Lamidi Akani, 50, and his accomplice, Olakunle Waheed, 45, both pleaded guilty to the two counts of conspiracy and stealing.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr. Olusola Aluko, said the convicts were sentenced based on their self confession to the offences and the evidence tendered by the prosecution.

“Though the convicts are remorseful and sober, the law must still take its due course,” he said.

He, however, gave them an option of N5,000 fine each.

Counsel for the convicts, Mr Henry Odunayo, had earlier begged the court for leniency on behalf of his clients.

Odunayo explained that if they were jailed without an option of fine, their dependants would suffer.

The prosecutor, Joshua Oladoye,  had told the court during the summary trial that the they conspired and committed the offence on October 21 at Slava Yetidepe Construction Company, Ata-oja Estate in Osogbo.
