30 Killed As Obi/Obiano’s Campaign During Night Vigil Causes Stampede

A prayer night vigil which was turned into a campaign event by the Governor of Anambra state, Mr Peter Obi to drum up support for the candidate of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA), Mr Willie Obiano turned bloody as over 30 persons were killed in the stampede that resulted from the event.

Worshippers whom many a source said are mainly sympathizers of the All Progressive Congress (APC) candidate, Dr Chris Ngige had gathered at the Holy Ghost Adoration Ground, located at Uke town in Anambra State when Governor Peter Obi and his candidate, Willie Obiano arrived at the early morning hours of about 12:15am to address the audience.

The arrival of the Governor and the APGA candidate was said to have taken the worshippers by surprise as many did not expect his presence, but just as Peter Obi mounted the stage to address the audience, a quiet murmur was said to have broken out among the worshippers,

Unsure of what to make of it, the Governor continued to deliver his campaign speech with Willie Obiano standing beside him.
In his speech, Governor Peter Obi promised to make available N5million to the prayer house to help tackle a gully erosion site near the Adoration grounds, but the quiet murmuring that started as he mounted the stage grew louder – followed by chants of ‘Onwa, Onwa’ and in reaction to the chants of Onwa, Willie Obiano/Peter Obi’s men including security operatives reportedly rushed towards the area where the chants of Onwa was coming from. The chanters were moving away from the approaching armed men. In the process, it turned into a stampede.

At the end of the stampede, over 28 corpses were seen littered on the grounds. An estimate of over 200 were injured. According to one of the survivors, a large percentage of those killed and injured are believed to be the supporters of Dr Chris Ngige.

The survivor added that “they rejected Obiano and willie and were chanting Ngige Ngige it took hours to calm the crowd by Father Ebube Muonso so that Peter Obi could speak. Peter Obi made donation of N2million to the Reverend Father. The Father rejected it and ask him to give that to the poor whom he have starved for years. And later there was a stampede. Obiano and Peter Obi has sucked the blood of innocent worshippers. Peter Obi is the Chimaroke of Anambra“

In another account, a participant at the night vigil said the stampede started when a supposedly planted mole raise a false alarm, outside the prayer ground with a shout of fire, fire, fire.

As a result of the false alarm, some of the worshippers who were already leaving the prayer ground hurriedly began rushing back into the adoration ground to avoid the fire; a fire which many of them didn’t even see. This led to the stampede where many were killed and several others said to be wounded.

About 30 bodies were said to have been carried away from the ground but official statistics and reports is yet to be released from the Adoration ground or from the hospital.
