The President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, has charged the men of the Armed Forces to salvage the reputation of the country by making the country safer.
The President spoke at the decoration ceremony organised for newly promoted 48 two-star generals of the Armed Forces in Abuja on Friday.
Out of the 48 generals who were decorated, the Army had 27; the Navy had six while 15 came from the Air Force.
Jonathan said that it was important for Nigerians to work together to put the Armed Forces in the desired position to surmount the security challenges in the country.
The President also charged the newly decorated two-star generals to exploit the opportunity of their promotion to make the expected input to security of lives and property in the society.
He said, “It is a very challenging period in this country and we expect as the saying goes that those to whom much is given much is expected.
“For those of you who are decorated as full two star generals, we expect that you bring your experience to bear. We must work together as a team to make sure that the Armed Forces are able to protect lives and property of Nigerians.
“If we don’t do that, then of course the reputation of the country will continue to go down.
“A number of issues are being raised in the media which you know much more than I do, which are so much of a challenge on the Armed Forces and other security agencies of this country.
“All of us collectively must stand up to our responsibility and go the extra mile, we need to add, the extra, to see that as a nation we overcome these challenges.”
Jonathan also observed that the situation in the Armed Forces showed that the leadership of the country had not done what was expected of them.
He said that there were a lot of things the Armed Forces should have acquired that they did not have.
