Zakat and Sadaqat Foundation says it has distributed N30million to 47 indigent Nigerians, including two Christians, in its last zakat (charity) distribution exercise.
ZSF’s Executive Director Abdullah Shuaib said in a statement yesterday that some of the beneficiaries of the Zakat proceeds shed tears of joy as they received their cheques at the Lagos office of the group.
Zakat, the third pillar of Islam, was legislated to reduce poverty in the society and purifies the wealth of the rich ones, according to Islamic clerics.
But Shuaib said in the statement that non-Muslims can also be given the Zakat as two of the beneficiaries in the last distribution were Christians.
“The day marked a red-letter day in the life of some of the beneficiaries of the Zakat. This assertion is informed by the avalanche of distress calls and requests tabled by the beneficiaries whose lives hitherto were at the verge of total disintegration but saved by the Zakah fund realised during last Ramadan fast courtesy of Nigerian Muslims that paid their Zakah”, he said.
