Senate asks IGP to prosecute alleged child rapist policeman

The Senate on Thursday condemned the sexual abuse of a two-year-old baby girl by a policeman and asked the Inspector General of Police to immediately arrest and prosecute the randy officer.

The senators passed the resolution after they made valuable contributions to a motion moved by Senator Hellen Esuene from Akwa Ibom State, which drew their attention of her colleagues to the incident which occurred in the Mararaba community in Nasarawa State.

She lamented that the nation had been witnessing acts of cruelty to babies by their being kidnapped, abused and sold as commodities.

She noted with concern that the recent case of criminality in Mararaba, meted to a two years old baby girl, Chinwendu Onwudiwe, by one Anthony Onoja, a corporal in the police force, was highly unfortunate.

She explained that the matter was reported to the Nigerian police but that “it had yet to be taken to court despite the fact that Section 31 and 32 of the Child’s Rights Act make the case a criminal offence which attracts life imprisonment or 14 years imprisonment depending on the nature of the abuse.”

She noted that the incident was not the first time a police officer sexually abused an infant and would be reported in the Senate.

She added that the issue of rape, where offenders were allowed to go unpunished, was unacceptable.

Senator Abdul Ningi, who seconded the motion, lamented the development especially because it involved a policeman, who sexually abused a two-year-old baby girl.
