The federal government says Nigeria cannot work without rationalizing many of the federal agencies, parastatals and commissions.
Information Minister Labaran Maku said this in Abuja yesterday while briefing State House correspondents on the outcome of the Federal Executive Council meeting.
He said after concluding deliberation on the draft white paper on the report of the Orosanye-led Presidential Committee on the Restructuring and Rationalization of Government Parastatals, Commissions and Agencies; the council had decided to reduce the number of agencies, especially those with overlapping functions.
The minister declined comment on the number and names of the agencies affected, saying Nigerians would get the details very soon after the “cleaning-up” of the draft white paper.
Meanwhile, presidential spokesman, Reuben Abati, had a fortnight ago disclosed that of the 541 agencies recommended for rationalization by Orosanye panel, the white paper drafting committee had accepted only 321.
Maku further disclosed that the government also resolved that research agencies currently under the Ministry of Science and Technology be realigned and put in the various universities across the country.
