Commercial Bus Driver Kills Woman

A commercial bus on Thursday night knocked down and killed a middle-aged woman at Benson-Total area of Ikorodu, a suburb of Lagos State.

Eyewitnesses said the driver was being pursued by a policeman when the incident happened.

The policeman, whose identity was still unknown as at press time, was said to have chased the vehicle after the driver refused to part with some money allegedly requested by the security operative.

The eyewitness, who did not want his name published, told Saturday PUNCH that the victim died on the spot, while the driver and the policeman fled the scene.

He said, "The bus driver did not want to give the policeman money and the two went into a struggle. The driver accelerated, while the officer pursued him.

"The bus, however, accidently knocked the woman down. Two of them fled the scene and abandoned the woman on the ground."

Another eyewitness said, "The woman was one of the traders at Benson Garage in Ikorodu. After closing for the day's business and getting home, she went to Total Filling Station to buy kerosene.

"Unfortunately, she was knocked down by the bus on her way home."

It was a gory sight when our correspondent visited the scene, as the victim was in a pool of blood.

It was also observed that her skull might have been broken as her head was covered with blood.
