INEC will always do right in regulating political processes -- Official

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Monday in Abuja denied reports that it has rejected a bid by some political parties to merge with the name All Progressives Congress (APC).

Mr Kayode Idowu, Chief Press Secretary to INEC Chairman, made the denial in a press statement issued on Monday.

According to him, the reports in some newspapers are false and unfounded.

"The attention of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has been drawn to reports in some newspapers today, Monday, April 29, that it has rejected a bid by some political parties to merge as the All Progressives Congress (APC)," he said.

He said the commission had not written to the affected parties to stop their bid to merge under a new name .

Idowu explained that the commission only turned down an application by another political association seeking registration under the name the "All Progressives Congress of Nigeria (APCN)."

The commission's position is contained in a letter dated April 23, and signed by its Secretary.

He further explained that the reason for the commission's action is simply that  the acronym proposed by the political association shared a similarity with another already seeking registration.

"The commission hereby reassures Nigerians that it will always do the right thing as a dispassionate and impartial regulator of the political process," he said. (NAN
