JTF, In Borno State, Alerts Public Boko Haram Turning To Kidnapping

The Joint Task Force Operation's (JTF) in Borno State today warned the public about the existence of a special kidnapping squad set up by the Boko Haram sect to engage in kidnapping.

In a statement by its spokesman, Lieutenant Colonel Sagir Musa, JTF said that its security measures have made it difficult or impossible for the terrorists and other criminals to conduct successful bank robbery operations in the State, and pushed Boko Haram into turning to kidnapping.

Prospective targets, the statement warned, include wealthy relatives, politicians, businessmen and women, traditional rulers, senior civil servants, and foreigners.

"The Task Force wishes to alert members of the public of this trend, urge all to be wary and continue to be security conscious at all times," it further said.

"The public are advised to avoid or be very sensitive to strangers and friends that have not been in contact for long. Additionally, members of the public are also warned to avoid isolated areas and shun meetings or friendship organized through telephones or social media."

It emphasized the importance of cooperation and understanding between members of the public and security agencies, and that security is a collective responsibility.
