MURDER OF YOUNGSTER BY POLICE SPARKS RIOT IN ZARIA

The killing of a youngster Muhammad Murtala alias Bala allegedly by some police officers in Daurawa Sabon Gari, Zaria last Sunday night yesterday sparked riot in the area. A police outpost was torched in the ensuing protest.
Speaking to Daily Trust, the mother of the deceased Hafsat Shehu said her late son was a driver who had just return from a trip on Friday.
“I cannot tell why they killed my son but they clubbed him to death. My son had been sleeping throughout yesterday (Sunday) as he was resting following his trip to Warri, Delta state with his father. He woke up around 6:30pm.”
She said: “Later in the night at about 8pm, he came to me asking for money to buy candle because he had given me some money to keep for him. I advised him to buy torchlight instead of candle because it is safer.”
Muhammad left the house to his elder brother’s house at about 11 pm she said.
It was his elder brother that came to break the news that Muhammed had been brutalized. He bled to death she said.
When the youths of the area heard about the death of Murtala, they mobilised to the Muchia police outpost and set it ablaze.
When contacted on phone, the Kaduna state police command’s public relations officer DSP Aminu Lawal did not answer the telephone call. He also did not reply the text message sent to his mobile phone.
However, a police source in Zaria said those who killed Murtala were not full police officers, “but police constable who are not well trained. We have commenced investigation.”
