A white Volkswagen Golf car said to be loaded with guns and other weapons suspected to be explosives was on Friday night intercepted by policemen in Makurdi, the Benue state capital.
Witnesses said that the car, with its five occupants, was intercepted at Ankpa junction along the Naka-Makurdi express way at about 8:30pm.
“We heard a gunshot at the junction. Suddenly, we saw the police catch up with a white Volkswagen Golf and fired a shot at the occupants. But four out of the five persons in the vehicle fled, while the one who was shot on the leg was arrested as he could not run,” said a witness.
“When we got closer to the scene, the police were already interrogating the man. The man who was dressed in native kaftan confessed that he was a member of the dreaded Boko Haram. We saw the man’s waist stock with assorted guns and when the boot of the car was opened there were guns, a rocket launcher and other weapons like explosives,” he added.
When contacted, the Police Public Relation Officer, Daniel Ezeala confirmed the arrest, but said the man was not a Boko Haram member as alleged by witnesses.
