Terrorism worsening poverty in Nigeria - Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan has said terrorism is obstructing the nation’s socio-economic development and aggravating poverty.
Jonathan was speaking at the Presidential Villa in Abuja yesterday while receiving the United Arab Emirate  Minister of Energy, Mr. Suhail bin Mohammed Al Mazrouei, who visited him as a special envoy of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai and Vice President of the UAE.
Reiterating his call for greater international cooperation against terrorism, Jonathan said  “we must all cooperate to fight terrorism because no part of the world can be truly safe as long as terrorists remain amongst us.  In parts of our country, terrorism is obstructing socio-economic development and increasing poverty. We need cooperation and collaboration from our friends globally to successfully overcome it.”
He called for an expansion of bilateral relations between Nigeria and the UAE, saying Nigeria would welcome greater direct investment from the UAE for the development of her power, agricultural, oil and gas, communications and solid minerals sectors.
He said he looked forward to an early conclusion of agreements for the protection of investments and avoidance of double taxation between the UAE and Nigeria which, according to him, are expected to boost the in-flow of investments from the country to Nigeria.
Jonathan also pledged Nigeria’s support for Dubai’s bid to host the 2020 World Expo, saying he believed that the Emirates had developed the capacity to successfully host the event.
Earlier, Mazrouei conveyed greetings from the leadership of the UAE to Jonathan and congratulated him on the recent celebration of Nigeria’s 53rd independence anniversary.
Mazrouei also briefed Jonathan on Dubai’s bid to host the 2020 World Expo under the theme: “Connecting Minds, Creating the Future”.
