In commemoration of the nation’s 53rd anniversary and Ekiti State 17th, Governor Kayode Fayemi yesterday commuted the death sentence on Olabode Abirifon and Julius Abirifon by an Ado Ekiti High Court to life imprisonment. The duo have spent close to 16 years on death row.
The governor, who addressed the state yesterday, also ordered the release of eight others who were serving various sentences in prison.
Fayemi also announced that the state would engage another batch of 5,000 youths under its Youth Volunteer Scheme and another 1,800 youths under the Peace Corps Initiative being launched later this month.
Under its welfare scheme for the elderly in the state, Fayemi said he has approved six per cent increment in the salaries of pensioners in the state to take effect from January 2014.
