A non-profit capacity building organisation, Media, Information and Narrative Development, has produced a 55-minute documentary film, ‘The Daughters of the Niger Delta’, which highlights the challenges faced by women in the Niger Delta.
The documentary, sponsored by the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Abuja, tells the story of three courageous women, Hannah, Rebecca and Naomi, who are natives of Rivers, Delta and Bayelsa states, respectively.
Through the lives of these women, the film unveils some contemporary issues affecting the women folk, such as early marriage, sexual harassment, family planning and girl-child education.
In a statement, MIND says the documentary film is meant to engage the Nigerian public in thoughtful discussions about the responsibilities of the government to its people, as well as the traditions and cultural beliefs that are harmful to women.
It says the need to enforce sexual harassment disciplinary measures and how the education of women and girls can help increase the rate of economic growth and decrease the maternal and child mortality rates in Nigeria prompted the shooting of the film.
