BREAKING: Violence Erupts During FG/ASUU Meeting In UniAbuja Campus, Police Fire Tear-Gas
The reported meeting between the Federal Government, the Academic Staff of Universities (ASUU) and all Vice-Chancellors of Universities taking place in University Of Abuja, (Mini Campus) in Gwagwalada was Wednesday morning disrupted by violence as some persons moved to stop the meeting.
Abusidiqu.com gathered that the meeting commenced at about 6:30 until about 10am when some intruders believed to be members of ASUU invaded the premises.
As soon as the violence erupted, policemen were quickly drafted to the scene were they were observed using tear-gas to scare away intruders.
There were reports this morning that there would be a secret meeting between the FG and ASUU, after a similar meeting with the Vice Chancellors of the federal universities for about two hours on Monday.
It was gathered, on Monday, that the meeting today would afford the ASUU to report to the government about the position of the union on the offers by the Federal Government so far.
Although, the President of ASUU, Dr Nasir Isa Fagge, could not confirm the willingness of ASUU to attend today’s meeting, it was gathered that zonal meetings of ASUU in their various universities were held last week to collate opinion of the members of the government offers.
The Federal government had agreed to increase the N30 billion already released for the payment of academic earned allowance to N40 billion, while universities would now be allowed to determine their priorities and not be “rail-roaded” into implementing a pre-determined set of projects with respect to the NEEDS assessment which the government has committed a N1oo to.
