LASU defends non-issuance of certificates to some part-time students

Scores of part-time graduates of the institution had in January complained and forwarded a letter to the Lagos State House of Assembly over delayed certificate issuance.
The authorities of the Lagos State University, LASU, Ojo, on Tuesday said that some of the past part-time students of the institution who complained of non-issuance of their certificates, had unresolved issues.
The Dean of Students Affairs, Kabir Akinyemi, said in Lagos that some of the affected students have not actually graduated as claimed.
Scores of part-time graduates of the institution had in January complained and forwarded a letter to the Lagos State House of Assembly over delayed certificate issuance.
Mr. Akinyemi said that some of the students had cases to clear with the university’s senate, ranging from pending carry over courses to absconding from school before graduation and examination malpractice.
“Some of the students do not have basis for an argument because they only purportedly felt that they have graduated, but still have one or two issues to settle with the university.
“Students should not just feel they have graduated until they are cleared from the students’ affairs unit and examination and records, which screens them on both academic and social issues,” he said.
Mr. Akinyemi, however, urged affected students with genuine cases to forward their complaints to the Director of External System, School of Part-Time Studies, Ojo, for resolution.
The dean noted that the present administration in the university inherited the problem of delayed issuance of certificates, but had taken measures to curb the trend.
He said that those who complained at the House of Assembly left the school about five years ago.
“The present administration of Prof. John Obafunwa has signed over 20, 000 certificates within two and a half years of its inception.
“The process has been structured in a way that immediately after the final year examination, senate sits and approves results and students are summoned for convocation, where they are awarded their certificates immediately.
“The process has eradicated the issue of non-issuance of certificate,” he said.
