Sambo makes case for peace at independence service

Vice President Namadi Sambo has called on Nigerians to embrace peace. Sambo joined Muslim faithful at the National Mosque, Abuja for a special prayer session in commemoration of the nation’s 53rd Independence anniversary.

A statement by his spokesman, Umar Sani, said the Vice President called on all Nigerians to be their brothers’ keepers and live in peace and harmony with one another.

He joined other faithful to pray for President Goodluck Jonathan and other leaders in the country for the wisdom and strength to pilot the affairs of the nation in the right path.

This, he explained, is the only way the nation can witness peace and development.

“I pray to Allah (SWT) to continue to protect our leader, protect our president, to continue to guide him and also to allow peace to reign in Nigeria, to continue to give our leaders the wisdom and the strength to put Nigeria in the right path of progress and development, for all Nigerians to be our brothers’ keeper,” Sambo was quoted as saying.

Earlier, the Imam of the mosque, Sheikh Shehu Onidewura, extolled the virtues of the nation’s founding fathers whom, he said, despite the challenges of their time, were able to weather the storm by entrenching peace and unity in the country.

He prayed for the prosperity of Nigeria in peace and harmony.

He decried the insecurity being witnessed in some parts of the country and prayed for an end to the  carnage.

Dignitaries who joined Sambo at the service included Governor Tanko Al-Makura of Nassarawa State; Governor Ibrahim Geidam of Yobe State;  Etsu Nupe, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar; Chief of Defence  Staff,  Ola Ibrahim; and the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed  Abubakar.

Others were the Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Senator Bala Mohammed; Minister of Special Duties, Tanimu Turaki; and Minister of State Finance, Dr.  Yarima  Ngama,  amongst others.
