Supporters of the popular, Oloolu masquerade, in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Wednesday caused havoc in Popoyemoja and Bode areas in Ibadan South West local government of the state when about 16 vehicles were vandalised and residents attacked with dangerous weapons.
The incident, LEADERSHIP FRIDAY, learnt took place between 4.30 pm and 5.00 pm shortly after the masquerade had paid courtesy visit on two prominent Ibadan chiefs in the area.
The supporters who wore ‘T’ shirt with inscription “Odun Esan” meaning year of revenge , had, on getting to the areas launched attack on the residents with dangerous weapons despite the presence of policemen.
When our correspondent visited the area, yesterday, the residents lamented the onslaught, saying that it was in revenge of what happened in the area during the festival last year.
It would be recalled that it was the same area that some hoodlums allegedlly attacked the masquerade during which one person was killed and several others injured.
Apart from depriving the people of their valuables like money and handsets, the hoodlums allegedlly broke into shops and houses, during which household items were carted away.
Confirming the incident, the police public relations officer (PPRO), DSP Olabisi Ilubanafor, said that it was some hoodlums who prevented them from attacking the masquerade that wrecked the havoc.
She said that the hoodlums had shoot sporadically with a view to attacking the masquerade with dangerous weapons.
She confirmed that vehicles were vandalised but said the owners were yet to be identified as nobody had reported to the police.
However, the PPRO disclosed that three people namely; Ibrahim Isiaka, Yakubu Isiaka and Fatai Bakare had been arrested in connection with the incident and that they had been transfered to the state Criminal Investigation Department (CID) with dangerous weapons recovered from them.
Some of the vehicles vandalized include Volkswagen Jeta car with registration number AG 483 SHK, AA 893 SHK, Toyota with registration number AB 470 AAB (Ogun), MUS 952 BE, Mrzedez Benz with registration number EJ 161 ABC (Abuja), Merzedez with number MS 194 AAA (Lagos), AA 768 TUN (Ekiti), Ford car with number AJ 191 YNF (Oyo) and AA 102 RRU (Edo), Honda car with number EPE 452 BH (Lagos), AM 59 KSF (Lagos), and AR 19 NRK(Oyo) among others.*
