We Don’t Have An Ideology – PDP

The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Bamanga Tukur, has admitted that his political party has no ideology.

He also described the calls on President Goodluck Jonathan to resign as a result of the consistent insecurity in the nation as misplaced.

Mr. Tukur made these observations when he spoke with journalists in his office at Wadata Plaza, Zone Five, Abuja on Monday.

“In other places, at the beginning, it is ideology,” he said in often incoherent comments. Then he added: “We don't have [an] ideology at the moment. Before, [ideology] was communism, socialism. It was divided between the West and the East. It is no longer there.

“Everybody knows that today, it is human rights. That is your ideology. Justice, democracy and equity. These are the things.

“Now, how deep are you prepared to go in practicalizing these issues that will now appeal to your members so that they can continue supporting you? That is the idea. It gingers you. If you are sleeping before, now you wake up.”

On opposition demands that President Jonathan should step down, Mr. Tukur characterized those making the calls as ignorant.

“My reaction to this kind of talk is that it is just ignorance,” he said. Then he asked, “If something happens, is it the president who went and killed policemen? He is not.

“You see, if there is any security threat, the security people will take care of it. You could not link it up with the president.

“Recently, there were people killed in Boston Marathon by bombs. Would you ask Obama to resign because of that? There were massacre of school children (sic). Would you say Obama should resign?

“So, this is out of lack of exposure or out of ignorance that people say things. Opposition can say anything they like. So, I don't think we can bother ourselves about this.”
