Lagos acquires 100 compactors for PSPs

Lagos State government plans to provide 100 additional refuse compactors to Private Sector Participants, PSPs, as back-up trucks to its existing fleet of about 200 as part of effort to improve efficient and effective refuse collection and disposal in the state. Meantime, to ease movement of commuters during the Easter holiday, Lagos State government is offering commuters free bus ride on Easter Monday to ease movement during the celebration. Managing Director of LAWMA, Mr. Oladimeji Oresanya, made the revelations when he led a delegation of the agency on a visit to the management of Vanguard in Lagos. Oresanya explained that the measure became necessary due to the ever-increasing demand from residents in the inner streets and rough terrains where it was difficult for the regular refuse trucks to access. He said: “The state government is committed towards ensuring a cleaner, healthier Lagos for all residents.” (See full report next week). He said: “LAWMA has taken delivery of 100 new back-up trucks to be distributed to our registered Private Sector Participants, PSPs, as part of support service to enable them fully cover inner streets and rough terrains where regular refuse trucks can not easily access for collection of refuse. “We know that the activities of cart pushers have been banned in Lagos, and this is one of the measures we are taking to discourage residents from patronising cart pushers. Under no circumstances should residents patronise cart pushers because it is illegal to do so in Lagos.” According to Oresanya, the trucks would be presented to the PSP beneficiaries at a ceremony coming up next month.
