Alleged cult members remanded for murder
Three alleged cult members- Idowu Adeniji, Bashiru Ismail, and Balogun Babatunde – have been remanded in prison for the murder of one Tunde Kayode.
It was learnt that the accused persons and the deceased belonged to the same cult group known as Eiye Confraternity.
They reportedly had a disagreement which set off the gang against 23-year-old Kayode.
He was said to have been shot dead on November 10, 2013, at his parent’s home at Popo-Oba Street, in the Epe area of Lagos State.
The accused persons allegedly fled the scene of the crime, but were later apprehended in Ogun State.
The Investigating Police Officer, Anthony Nnadozie, said the accused persons were identified by witnesses.
They were subsequently arraigned on two counts of conspiracy and murder before an Ebute Meta Magistrate’s Court.
The charges read, “That you, Idowu Adeniji, Bashiru Ismail, Balogun Babatunde and others now at large, on November 10, 2013 at 7.30pm, at 17, Popo-Oba Street, Epe Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did conspire amongst yourselves to commit felony to wit murder.
“That you did unlawfully kill one Tunde Kayode, aged 23 years, by shooting him with a gun and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 221 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2011.”
The defendants’ pleas were not taken.
The police prosecutor, Inspector Clement Okuimoise, applied that the defendant be remanded in prison pursuant to Section 264 of the Administration of Criminal Justice, Lagos State, Nigeria 2011.
He said the remand would also allow the police duplicate the case file for legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecution.
The magistrate, Mr. O.O Olatunji, granted the request of the police prosecutor and ordered that the three men be remanded in the Ikoyi prison pending the DPP’s advice.
The matter was adjourned till January 27, 2014.
