Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega, said on Wednesday that there would be no new voter registration for the 2015 general elections because the commission had no money and facilities to do that.
He also insisted that the voter register used in the November 16 Anambra governorship election would be used for the supplementary election on Saturday.
Jega spoke in Abuja at a meeting organised by the Civil Society Election Situation Room and Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre.
Members of the Civil Society Organisation at the forum expressed the fears ahead of the 2015 general elections due to the criticisms that followed the Anambra governorship election.
The INEC boss, however, assured the stakeholders that INEC would learn from the observed lapses in the election and improve on them ahead of the 2015 general elections starting with the supplementary election.
“There should be no panicking to conduct the supplementary. Panicking is not an option. We should maintain our sanity and remain focus,” he said.
Jega promised that irregularities that rocked the election would be investigated after the supplementary election and that offenders would face prosecution to serve as deterrent to others.
“With Anambra, we are going to do it. We will do it thoroughly and meticulously. We will not spare anybody that is fraudulent,” he vowed.
