Don’t elect leaders on religious sentiment –Northern CAN

The General Secretary of the Christian Association of  Nigeria in the 19 Northern States and the Federal Capital Territory, Prof. Daniel Babaye,  has asked Nigerians to elect leaders based on competence rather than on religious or ethnic grounds.

The CAN leader, speaking at a one day conference with the theme ‘Religion and Good Governance’, organised by the Christian Awareness Initiatives  in Kaduna on Wednesday, said any government that reneged on its electoral promise  should be viewed as an unserious government.

He said Nigerians should elect leaders based on competence and not on religious basis or sentiments.

Babaye said, “There is nothing like Christian government and there will never be. It’s a fallacy for someone to say we need a Christian government. It has never happened and it will not happen because leadership comes from God and anyone that does not do well, God will bring him or her down.”

Babaye, who claimed that voting, based on religion, had only succeeded in breeding institutions that were irresponsive, urged Nigerians to be involved in the enthronement of good leaders that would work for the people regardless of religious affiliation.
