The Police in Gombe on Wednesday said it had arrested 56 political thugs, popularly known as `Yan Kalare'.
The hoodlums specialised in terrorising and unleashing mayhem on the residents of the state capital and its environs.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Mohammed Sule, told newsmen that the suspects were arrested in different groups during a raid in Gombe township.
He said that a gang of nine suspects and another group of two were also arrested in the state recently.
Sule disclosed that two ring leaders were among the hoodlums arrested.
``The two of them have confessed to the murder of several innocent persons in the state,” he alleged.
He added that the suspects were arrested with various dangerous weapons such as cutlasses, daggers and knives.
On the nine-man gang, he said, they specialised in raping women and young girls, and that they had been charged to court.
According to him, two people have also been arrested for allegedly kidnapping a young lady and that they will be charged to court soon.
The commissioner further said that other suspects had been arrested for committing various offences, including mischief, breach of the peace, causing hurt, theft and extortion, among others.
He advised parents to caution their children against indulging in social vices and assured the people of the command’s readiness to rid the state of crime.
