Police arrest bandits who rob, beat traders in Kwara
The Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ambrose Aisabor, on Thursday said the police command had arrested a four-member armed robbery gang from Nasarawa State.
Parading the suspects in Ilorin, the police commissioner stated that the suspects had been terrorising road users in and around Kwara State.
According to him, the bandits had gone to rob 13 female traders who had come from Ilesa, Osun State, to buy food items at Tsaragi Market in Gbuugbu area of the state.
The traders were said to have slept in the town on the eve of the market day when they were attacked.
The CP said the suspects attacked the traders, beat some of them up and allegedly robbed them of N1m.One of the traders, who pleaded anonymity for security reasons said, “We just heard sporadic gun shots from the hoodlums at about 2 a.m. at Gbugbu where we usually slept a day before every Wednesday Tsaragi market day. They succeeded in collecting all our money and even injured some of us while beating us with sticks.
“We call on police authorities and government to help us recover our money.”
Aisabor said the bandits were arrested based on intelligence report.
The CP said men of the federal highway patrol team intercepted a vehicle, Opel Vetra, marked Plateau BSA 24 XA along Tsaragi/Lafiagi/Yikpata road, with four occupants.
Aisabor said, “On investigations, it was discovered that the suspects were part of the dare devil armed gang terrorising highways in and around Kwara State in recent times and were on a mission to rob people going to Wednesday Tsaragi market before they ran into impregnable security cordon of men.”
