The national leaders of the All Progressives Congress have selected Rivers State Governor Chibuike Amaechi; and former Minister of External Affairs, Chief Tom Ikimi, to intervene and resolve the crisis rocking the party in Bayelsa State.
Also on the team are the South-South members of the interim committee of the party, including a former national youth leader, Mr. Miriki Ebikibina.
A chieftain of the APC told our correspondent that the directive for Amaechi and others to intervene in the crisis came from the party’s interim national chairman, Chief Bisi Akande.
The Peoples Democratic Party in Bayelsa and Governor Seriake Dickson had raised the alarm that the leadership tussle in the state’s APC was threatening the peace and security in the state.
Dickson had therefore called on the APC national leadership to put its house in order as he would not condone any breakdown of law and order in his state.
Another APC source, who craved anonymity, said the choice of Ikimi to be part of the peacemakers was based on his supervisory role as the leader in charge of the party in the South-South geo-political zone.
The source said the team was expected to meet with the warring factions of the loyalists of the former Bayelsa State Governor Timipre Sylva in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, over the crisis.
He said the team was also expected to intervene in the crisis in the chapter of the party in Akwa Ibom State between the 2011 governorship candidate of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria, Senator Akpan Udoedehe, and other APC leaders in the state.
Ahead of the meeting in Port Harcourt, it was learnt that Sylva’s loyalists had been urged to stop further media war.
“The only aspect of APC crisis in Bayelsa is that of the Sylva loyalists; they are at daggers drawn with one another. The team will resolve the issues before the inauguration of the party in the state,” the source said.
The APC leader in the state, Chief Richard Kpodo, confirmed the nomination of the team.
Kpodo said, “We accept the development because it is coming from the APC national leaders. We joined the APC because we believe in justice and if the peace move will bring justice and not one-sided, I have no problem with it.
“When it will not be accepted is when justice tilts to one side. This is so because nobody is indispensable.”
