A 23-year-old man, Opeyemi Olusola, who allegedly operated an unlicensed blood bank, on Tuesday appeared before a Yaba Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.
Olusola, who resides at No. 23, Omotoye Owolabi St., Orile Agege, a Lagos suburb, is facing an eight-count charge of illegal collection, handling and distribution of blood for medical purposes.
The Prosecutor, ASP Felix Ifijen, told the court that the accused operated an unlicensed blood bank in his residence from January, 2011 and Oct. 6, 2013.
He said that the accused repeatedly lured teenagers to donate blood for medical reasons without routine screenings.
According to Ifijen, the accused collected blood of seven teenagers on Oct. 2 without screening.
He said that the accused was arrested following a tip-off.
“He was arrested following a tip-off on the same day he obtained the blood of Sunday Omire, 15; Adedotun Odulaja, 15; Emeka Ude, 17; Femi Shobanjo, 19; Segun Adelusi, 19; Thomas Adetunji, 14; and Sule Audu 18,’’ Ifijen said.
The prosecutor said that the offences contravened Sections 25, 27, 30 and 31 of the Lagos State Blood Transfusion, Law.
Olusola, however, pleaded not guilty.
The Magistrate, Mrs Yewande Aje-Afunwa, granted him bail in the sum of N50, 000 with two sureties in like sum.
