Governor of Jigawa State Sule Lamido has said that President Goodluck Jonathan can’t fault him on transparency and prudent management of public funds. He said it was shocking that Jonathan who had in the past praised him for proper utilisation of funds has turned round to use security agents to go after his family on the grounds of corruption.
In an interview with LEADERSHIP Sunday, Lamido recalled his many political battles in life. Even in his home state, President Jonathan had swept corruption issues affecting his political godfather Diepreye Alamieyeseigha underground, but mobilised the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to intimidate him under the guise of fighting corruption, the governor said.
Lamido said: “This arrest of my children on alleged corruption or stealing or whatever they call it is nothing short of political miscalculation and an attempt to jolt me to change my political philosophy and succumb to the selfish interest of an ordinary human being as against the wish of my God and the betterment of Nigeria.
“Let me inform my detractors, in the last 30 years of my political struggle, I was harassed, arrested persecuted by those who saw my struggle as a threat to their interest, but I endured and refused to pipe down. So at my age now and with my past experience, it is a big mistake for anybody to think of using any form of threat against my family, or my life or anything else to taunt me.”
Lamido described Jonathan as a man who comes to a petrol filing station with a burning match stick and must be stopped by Nigerians to save the country from collapse.
On leadership, the governor said “with the exception of Holy Prophet Muhammad who had led with divine guidance, no ordinary person can claim to be 100 per cent perfect in his leadership. He must have his own shortcomings, but what is generally needed from a leader is his ability to stand firmly and remain committed and do the right things”
