Chairman, Senate Committee on Cooperation and Integration in Africa and New Partnership for Africa’s Development, Senator Simeon Ajibola; a senator that represented Kwara South in 1999, Senator Makanjuola Ajadi, and the Kwara State Chairman of SURE- P, Mr. Moses Ibiyemi, have said that any attempt to impeach President Goodluck Jonathan will fail.
They also said the defection of some members of the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress in some states was not harmful to democracy. He said it would not affect the polity negatively and would not affect the chances of the PDP winning the 2015 elections.
Ajibola, Ajadi and Ibiyemi, spoke during a political sensitisation at Ajase-Ipo in Kwara on Saturday. They said the PDP would win in the state in 2015, in both the presidential and governorship elections.
Speaking on behalf of others, Ajibola, who represents Kwara South Senatorial District, said he felt elated at the turnout of his constituents at the summit, stating that any attempt to impeach Jonathan would fail.
According to him, members of the National Assembly, especially senators were experienced and focused elder statesmen who will not venture into acts that can truncate Nigeria’s democracy or heat-up the polity.
Ajibola added that the defection of some members of PDP in the state to APC would liberate the state from domination of few political elite and would ensure collective participation in decision-making.
Ajadi said those calling for Jonathan’s impeachment would not succeed, adding that the lawmakers would not engage in a venture that might destabilise the country.
He also appealed to Nigerians to be more committed to nation building rather than engage in divisive utterances and acts.
Ajadi said, “Where will those calling for Jonathan’s impeachment get two-third majority to do that kind of thing. Apart from that, many of the legislatures are independent-minded and sensible. They will not want to destroy the peace of Nigeria by embarking on that type of journey. So, they cannot succeed. The call does not make any meaning at all. Just because a particular former President wrote a letter; is that letter the basis for impeaching a president? Whether the content of the letter is true or not, nobody knows. How can you be calling for an impeachment? It does not make any meaning at all.
“The defection of these people from PDP to APC will not affect the progress of PDP in Kwara State. PDP will still win both the governorship and presidential elections in the state come 2015.”
